Press Start to Continue — If You Dare

Some video games like to throw dirt in your eye and laugh when you are down. What games have frustrated you so badly that you nearly gave up? Why? And how did you overcome the insurmountable challenge?

  1. I can’t think of any games that made me really frustrated other than playing fighting games with my brother. I don’t really remember ever beating him. Maybe if I practice, I will be a better player.

I’m sure there are a lot that I’ve put down in utter frustration and come back to but I’m drawing a blank.

  3. I think the hardest games for me that’s most recent would be dark souls 3 and crash bandicoot n-sane trilogy. Now if we’re talking about retro games, I’d have to say separation anxiety and Altered Beast on the genesis.

  4. Dark Souls and Bloodborne have both driven me to nearly quit but sometimes taking a break or getting really mad and becoming determined to beat something is what helps pull me back in. I beat the original Dark Souls using these methods and I’m working my way through Bloodborne now in the same way.

  5. I’m going to have to agree with Kuribo. Dark Souls wrecked me. Video games nowadays tend to be much easier, but Dark Souls has that old school, unforgiving feel to it. Skyrim was out around the same time, so I decided to just play it instead. I did end up getting Bloodborne though, absolutely loved it and unlocked the platinum trophy. This inspired me to go back and finish Dark Souls 1, 2 & 3. Bloodborne is a great training tool apparently.

I have a low threshold for difficulty. My free time is limited so I can’t afford to lose tons of progress due to a game over. I’ll often give up if I die too much in game. I did however beat Contra back in the day. The game was fun so I didn’t mind replaying the earlier levels. When I was younger I also didn’t have the luxury of buying something else if I got stuck.

    • Hmmm interesting thoughts. I know what you mean about free time being limited. I suppose that’s one reason why I don’t play very difficult games either. Never really thought about that until now.

Lightning Returns when I first played it. I made the mistake of starting on normal difficulty instead of easy, haha. I’m a huge fan of Lightning, so I stuck with it and found it very rewarding once I got the hang of it!
