What was the first video game you played, and how did it make you feel?
Did anyone start playing video games late in life and why?

I honestly don’t remember what the first game that I actually played was but it was on the Atari 2600. My guess would be either Soccer or The Empire Strikes Back. I do remember that playing a game with moving images on my television was a magical experience.

I also remember it being a magical experience but don’t remember the first game. Perhaps, and It feels so cliche to say this, it was Super Mario Bros. I remember watching my brother play it, and then he left the room, saying I could try it. I remember thinking I must play this, and I probably didn’t even know why I was interested. I just had to play.

According to my brother, we played Friday the 13th for the NES. We both got scared. I honestly don’t know how we got a copy of the game because my parents did not like us watching or playing anything scary.

That’s a cute story. I remember playing NES games with my brother too. Playing with him was so much fun, even if the game wasn’t very good.

It was the music and Jason’s appearance that scared us. Even though game is not good, I think the game succeeded at scaring children. My brother told me we ran out of the house as soon as we saw Jason popped up. Glad to hear you had fun with your brother playing the game. 🙂

My first game was probably Space Invaders on the Atari 2600. It must have made quite the impression because I still am playing consoles to this day.

Cool! I love Space Invaders. I’m glad to see people don’t leave behind old hobbies they love.

I think it was Galaxian or something similar on BBC. But I’m really not sure of that as it was a game collection on a disc.

Game collection discs were great. I remember my older cousin would bring over discs that had Wolfenstein, Scorched Earth and others that I loved playing.

The first game I played was SMB on the NES. My babysitter’s son had gotten the console for Xmas the year it launched in the States. I was awful at it, didn’t get the appeal, but I was determined to get better. I ended up getting obsessed, though, and here I am 31 years later still gaming at 36.

Nice! I was awful at first too. But, even though I didn’t understand why or couldn’t articulate it, I loved that game from the first time I saw it.

It was either Donkey Kong or Pitfall on the Colecovision- though my first vivid memories are of Super Mario Bros on the NES (and some arcade machine at rhe laundromat down the street). Like one of the replies before, I remember thinking that playing what the television had on it rather than just watching it was such an amazing experience. I was hooked from there.

I was hooked the first time I saw Super Mario Bros too. I have a vivid memory of watching my brother play it, and then yearning to pick up the controller and play.

Taz-mania on the good ol’ SNES when I was 5. It was a really bad time and that’s when I first discovered the power that video games have to give me an escape from depressing reality 🙂

I’m sorry to hear that, but I’m glad to hear that playing video games cheered up another person. 🙂

Mine was Astro Wars. My dad was really addicted to it – the first and only game he ever really played. Not for me though after my first go I am still playing games some 30 years later

The first game I played was The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I was 5 years old, and I was terrible at it. I could figure out how to save, so I keep having to restart over and over again.

That’s definitely a cute and unique story. I think I had my older brother save stuff for me when I was little and playing NES games.

My “older” brother is only 5 mins older, so it was the blind leading the blind. LOL.

It was either Super Mario Brothers or Super Mario Brothers 3 on NES when I was in elementary school. I was immediately hooked!

I know the feeling. For me, it was Super Mario Brothers.

I think I played NES at my neighbor’s house before I had any of my own systems, but the first game I remember receiving and playing is Tetris on the Game Boy when I was 6. I was immediately hooked, and almost 27 years later, gaming is still my favorite hobby!

Oh, I remember my love for Tetris on Game Boy. Those were the days!
It brings a smile to my face when I hear people, no matter what hobby, talk about things they love. I suppose it reminds me of the joys of life.

I agree! When I see someone so happy doing something they love (even if it’s not something I enjoy myself) it makes me happy 🙂

I played SNES at my cousin’s house. We play Mortal Kombat and even Power Rangers non-stop.

Cool. Was Power Rangers any good? I guess the game doesn’t matter, though, if you’re having fun with friends.

Its fun but repetitive at some point. Didn’t mind them though since I’m a fan. 😂

Cool. I remember liking the show as a kid but never got into it after that.
