You and Ralph Have Something in Common

Wreck-It RalphWreck-It Ralph has smashed his way into my heart. I think both non gamers and gamers should watch it. They might find different things to love about this movie. But I think both groups can understand Ralph’s quest to live an authentic life and feel loved.

The movie makes video games fun for non gamers of all ages. Kids who have not played a video game might love the colorful setting and cartoon-like characters. Meanwhile, adults might like that they can watch the movie with their kids. Some of these adults might even explore video games as a new hobby.

At the same time, seasoned gamers will love all the video game references. They’ll see tons of references to games like Call of Duty, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong and more. And classic characters from these games pop up too. In one scene, you’ll see a veritable pantheon of big, bad bosses, like Bowser and Dr. Robotnik, on the screen. If that wasn’t enough, old school gamers might enjoy the movie’s arcade setting and Q-Bert cameo. This movie could be a love letter to gamers.

So gamers and non gamers might like this movie for all kinds of different reasons. Is there anything about it that both of these groups could like?

I think Ralph’s story has timeless themes that can appeal to both groups. I’m talking about making friends and the struggle to be authentic when it seems like you don’t fit in. Many people can relate to these themes and may have experienced them.

So I recommend Wreck-It Ralph. Then, if you haven’t already, go give video games a chance. You might find they have some themes that resonate with you too.

“Mark It Zero!”: The Game That Should Have Been at E3

Big Lebowski video gameWe saw a deluge of new games this week at E3, but I think we’re still missing one. That, my friends, is a Big Lebowski game.

What would a Big Lebowski video game play like? Tuck your mind into it’s warm bed and let me handle this perplexing problem for you, man. I’ve come up with three far out games that should appeal to all you Little Lebowskis.

Game idea # 1. The platformer that leaps over all the others

You find yourself in a strange, dark mansion wading through a maze of cob-web covered hallways. You fumble for a light switch and come across a picture of Nancy Reagan. You’re in a 8 bit version of The Big Lebowski’s mansion! Only it’s more like a haunted mansion.

Suddenly a man in black leather charges toward you with his sword. Watch out! He’s a nihilist.

“Don’t worry, Donny, these men are cowards.” That’s right: you only need to hurl yourself into the air and drop down like a brick to turn them into pancakes.

Then a group of golden coins shines so brilliantly that you can’t you ignore them. As you pocket the gold, you find bowling balls; lift them up and you’ll see that they’re 1 ups.

Now you’ve got to find Bunny Lebowski. She’s gone missing and The Big Lebowski fears the worst, but “she probably kidnapped herself.”

You don’t have much time to chew over theories because things get crazy. The Big Lebowski himself charges at you, in his flying chair, and you have to dodge his attacks.

After you do all that, you find out Bunny was hiding in another castle. Go on and keep looking.

You can play as these fine characters:

• Maude – She can jump so high that she practically disappears off the screen. Plus she zips along levels faster than you can do up your jacket zipper.

• Walter – He’s a tank on legs: his armor absorbs attacks and he deals significant damage. But he’s slow and can’t jump high.

• The Dude – A lazy man but also a “hero.” He’s your all round best bet with average jumping, speed and armor. But, hey, that’s just like my opinion, man.

Game idea # 2. Lebowski Bowling

Do you think this calls for Kinect or other motion controls? I hope not.

Anyway, you Donny and Walter have a lot of work to do if you want to roll into the finals. That’s where you have to strike out Jesus Quintana and O’Brien. Just watch out for the Jesus because he doesn’t let anyone mess with him. That guy is also a crazy pervert.

Walter’s a bit of a problem on your own team, too. If he gets incensed, his rage meter boils, and he pulls out his gun. Whatever you do, just don’t go over the line with Walter. Otherwise, he’ll “mark it zero!”

Game idea # 3. The Dude in a mystery adventure game (the title itself is still a bit of a mystery to me)

Super sleuth Jeff Lebowski, known as the dude, is on a mission. He’s sniffing around town for a Bunny Lebowski and starts his search in an old mansion. While searching face down on the ground, he finds a severed toe. Where did it come from?

The Dude turns to Da Fino, a Brother Seamus, for help. They embark on a hardboiled journey through the seedy side of L.A. to find the victim and the perp.

That’s all that I’ve got. Note: this blog post was mostly a lazy excuse to talk about my love for the Big Lebowski.

What do you think a good Lebowski game would look like?

Move Over, Motion Control! Play Video Games with Your Thoughts

Play Video Games with Your Thoughts“These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.” I’m sure all Star Wars fans have longed to use Jedi mind tricks.

What if you could play as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a game and do those tricks? You wouldn’t need a joystick, Kinect or a Wii.

All you need is your brain.

So I know this is old news but it might have slipped past most gamers like a sneaky snake. I’m talking about a New York Times Magazine article from September 14, 2011 by Pagan Kennedy.

Kennedy writes that surgeons use head implants in epilepsy patients as part of their treatment. (Read the article to learn more.)

In the article, “The Cyborg in Us All,” one man with the implant played the classic shooter Galaga. So that sounds normal. Well, the patient used his thoughts to move the ship and a computer understood him.

“Hold it right there! What did you say?”

Yes, you are awake. You read that right.

You could dump all your old school joysticks and motion controllers into the garbage can.

Imagine if you could use your thoughts to play all games. I think most gamers already use their head when they play, except for that one person who’s always team killing. But, seriously, the idea of using thoughts to play a game sounds cool.

I mean, you were probably tired of waggling your Wii mote. You hit your friend so many times in the chest while playing “tennis” that he or she punched you in the face. You were also a little tired of your neighbour watching while you did karate chops in your living room.

What do you think about using your thoughts to control games? Does it sound like video games could rot your brain, or does it sound like next-gen fun?

(By the way, the Galaga thing was just a small part of the article. Read the article to learn more about mind and machine.)

Movies Invade Your Video Games! Uncharted 3 and 3 Blockbuster Movies

Uncharted 3 Movie References

Pictured: My cold germs. Don’t worry! You won’t get sick from reading this post.

So I was cold and clammy for a good part of Christmas. I spent a lot of time growing roots on the couch while watching the same old action movies.

Yep, I’m alive and thriving now.

Anyway, Uncharted 3 has a crush on some major movies and it’s got it bad. In my opinion, the game doesn’t try to hide it like a secret admirer; it’s all out in the open. You can see the love of Hollywood in its eyes.

Let’s take a closer look. Continue reading
